Burgaw,
North
Carolina began with the construction
of the
Wilmington and Weldon Railroad train
depot around 1840. This track became one
of the most important in the South,
bringing commerce from the Deep South to
Richmond,
Virginia, and during the
Civil War, connecting
Wilmington's
fearless
blockade runners with the Rebel
leaders.
Burgaw, NC didn’t incorporate until
1879, taking the name of the local
Native Americans. The
National Register
of Historic Places lists four Burgaw
sites, including the depot, the
Bannerman House, done in Greek revival,
the
Pender County Courthouse, and the
entire
Burgaw Historic District.
As the seat of NC’s
Pender County,
Burgaw, NC hosts the region’s annual
Spring Festival on the courthouse lawn.
All the food, arts, and crafts displayed
here must be handmade or homegrown. Also
held here is the
North Carolina
Blueberry Festival, often drawing
upwards of 10,000 patrons.
While in town, visitors enjoy strolling
through Burgaw’s Antique Mall, named
The Antiqueplace, or shopping at
Harrell's
Department Store, over 100 years old and
still family-owned and operated. Dee’s
Drugstore offers an old-fashioned soda
fountain, to the delight of nostalgia
buffs, while the
Pender County Museum
awaits lovers of history.
Burgaw, North Carolina reported a
population of 3,337 in the
Census 2000.
Burgaw workers commuted 22 minutes, on
average, compared to the national
commute time of 26 minutes.
Burgaw children have six
schools
providing education. Those students
seeking higher education find three
institutes of higher learning within 40
miles. These are the
Coastal Carolina
and Cape Fear
Community Colleges, and
the University of North Carolina at
Wilmington. Fifteen percent of Burgaw
residents earn degrees of higher
learning.
